Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is hosting its annual Eagle Festival on Saturday, March 16, 2024, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Join us for this free, family-friendly event focused on birds of prey, with educational programs and exhibits featuring live birds and reptiles, hands-on activities, and refuge tours.
Programs in the big tent will kick off at 10:00 am with naturalist Liz Smith as she shares the special hunting adaptations of several native species of birds of prey. At 11:00 am, and again at 3:00 pm, naturalist Mike Callahan will present an interactive program focusing on bald eagles, owls, and other native raptors of Maryland. At 12:00 pm, and again at 2:30 pm, Maryland DNR ‘Scales and Tales’ naturalists will present an egg crushing demonstration, and at 1:00 pm, Animal Behavior and Conservation Connections presents a mixed-species free-flight program featuring species from around the world!
Guided tours will be available throughout the day, including eagle prowls and tours of Wildlife Drive. Registration for tours will begin at 9:30 am the day of the festival (no pre-registration). “Early birds” to the Eagle Festival can meet at the refuge’s Environmental Education Building on Wildlife Drive at 8:00 am for a guided birding tour with Terry Allen.
