SUMMARY:2024 Maryland Rod & Reef Slam
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored by CBF\, Chesapeake Oyster Alliance\, and Coastal Conservation Association Maryland. \nThe Rod & Reef Slam fishing tournament is unlike any other. You don’t just win by catching the biggest fish. To celebrate the vast biodiversity oyster reefs support\, prizes are instead awarded for how many different species you catch (and release). In the event of a tie\, the winner will be determined by the size of fish caught. Anglers of all skill levels fish on a multitude of restored reef locations throughout Maryland’s portion of the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers and record their catches in the tournament app (a link to the app will be provided after registering). See our map of restored oyster reefs in Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay and tributaries. \nFishing Tournament \nSaturday\, September 7\, 2024 at 6:00 a.m.-Sunday\, September 15\, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Registration closes September 6\, 2024. See the tournament registration page for entry fees\, times\, boundaries\, divisions\, and more. \nNOTE: A Tournament Waiver must be completed for each angler\, including youth participants\, and submitted to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation prior to fishing. A link to complete the online waiver will be provided in your registration confirmation email. Any fish caught before the waiver is received will not be recognized and will therefore be ineligible to win prizes. \nAwards and after-party will be held at CBF’s Philip Merrill Environmental Center in Annapolis\, 12 to 3 p.m. \nClick here to register and for full details.

SUMMARY:National Oyster Week
DESCRIPTION:What’s better than National Oyster Day? National Oyster Week\, of course! \nOysters clean Chesapeake Bay waters and provide habitat for other (delicious!) species like blue crabs\, rockfish\, and white perch. Did you know that eating oysters and recycling their shells leads to more oysters returned to the Bay? One reclaimed shell becomes a home for 10X as many babies! ORP\, the nonprofit expert in Chesapeake Bay oyster restoration\, relies on Shell Recycling Alliance restaurants to provide shell critical for oyster restoration efforts. Thanks to Maryland’s Best Seafood for sponsoring National Oyster Week. \nSay thank you to these Bay-friendly businesses by patronizing them this National Oyster Week! \nSee participating restaurants – and the oyster specials and promotions they’ll be offering!

SUMMARY:3rd Annual Nanticoke River Invasive Fishing Derby
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Salisbury University. \nDr. Noah Bressman’s lab at Salisbury University is hosting the third annual fishing tournament on the Nanticoke River (including tributaries like Marshyhope Creek and Barren Creek) targeting Blue Catfish and Northern Snakeheads. These are both invasive species that the Bressman lab is researching to learn more about their effects (or potential effects) on the local ecosystem. \nThere is no entry fee\, but we will have many prizes to give out!(details to come soon as the final funding is determined\, but if last year was any indication\, we had over $2000 in prizes!). Some prizes will be for a variety of categories including biggest\, most by number\, and most by weight for blue catfish and snakeheads\, as well as prizes for just showing up and participating! \nThere will be prizes for shore-based anglers\, kayakers\, and boaters. If you do not have any fishing gear but are interested in participating/learning how to fish\, we will have some gear for shore-based anglers that you can borrow for free at the event. We also have some sponsors that will also be giving away prizes\, including the Maryland Coastal Conservation Association (MD CCA) and Old Skool Tackle! \nIf you are competing in the shore-based division\, you must fish at Cherry Beach Park. If you are fishing from kayak or boat\, you may use any boat launch along the Nanticoke and tributaries\, but must bring the fish to the weigh-in at Cherry Beach by the deadline (1:30 pm). In any division\, if you run out of cooler space or feel like dropping fish off early\, you may do so at any time before 1:30 pm and we will weigh and process those fish\, which will still count to your total. \nRain date: 7/27 \nClick here for full details. \n
